Vocal range test: find your voice type

Sing into your microphone, from your lowest comfortable note to your highest, and the test keeps the lowest and highest notes you hold. It shows your range in note names and octaves, and the voice type it overlaps most.

Voice types run from bass, baritone and tenor to alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano. A note only counts once you hold it briefly, so a crack or a cough does not stretch your range.

How to test your vocal range

  • Warm up for a few minutes first, with humming or lip trills.
  • Press Start listening and sing a comfortable middle note.
  • Slide slowly down to the lowest note you can sing clearly, and hold it.
  • Slide up to the highest clear note and hold it. Never push to the point of strain.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my vocal range?

Sing from your lowest to your highest clear note into the microphone. The test shows both notes, your range in octaves and the closest voice type.

What is a normal vocal range?

Most untrained singers cover about one and a half to two octaves. Training extends the range and makes the ends easier to use.

Does my voice type depend only on range?

No. Teachers also listen to tone and where your voice feels most comfortable, so treat the result as a starting point.
