Free online metronome

Keep time while you practise with a metronome that runs in your browser. Set any tempo from 40 to 220 BPM, pick 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 or 6/8, and hear a higher click on the first beat of every bar.

Change the tempo while it plays, tap along to a song to set the speed, or jump to a preset from 60 to 160 BPM. Clicks are scheduled on the audio clock, so the beat stays steady even when the page is busy.

How to use the metronome

  • Drag the slider or use the minus and plus buttons to set the tempo.
  • Choose the beats per bar: 2/4, 3/4 (waltz), 4/4 or 6/8.
  • Press Start. The first beat of each bar has a higher click and a highlighted dot.
  • Press Tap tempo in time with a song to match its speed.
  • Mute the click to follow the flashing beat silently.
  • On this page, the space bar starts and stops it and the arrow keys change the tempo.

Practising with a metronome

  • Start a new piece slowly, around 60 BPM, and play it cleanly.
  • Raise the tempo by 5 BPM each time you play it without mistakes.
  • Count the beats aloud with the click until the metre feels natural.
