Find the key of a song from its chords

Tap in the chords of a song and the key finder ranks the keys they belong to, major and minor, with how many of your chords fit each one. The key whose home chord opens the song wins a tie.

Below the best match you see all seven chords of that key, so you can find the chord you are missing, write a bridge or improvise in the right scale.

How to find the key of a song

  • Pick the chord type, then tap each chord the song uses, starting with the first one.
  • Read the best match at the top. More chords that fit means a more certain answer.
  • A major key and its relative minor share the same chords; the song’s first and last chord usually tell you which one it is.
  • Tap a chord in your list to remove it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the key of a song?

List its chords and find the key that contains most of them. The first and last chord are usually the home chord of the key.

Why does the key finder show a major and a minor key?

Every major key has a relative minor with the same chords, such as C major and A minor. Which one a song is in depends on the chord it feels at home on.

What if none of the keys fit all my chords?

Many songs borrow a chord from another key. Go with the key that fits most chords, and treat the rest as colour.
