Tap tempo: find the BPM of any song

Tap along to a song to find its tempo. Each tap updates the beats per minute, averaged over your last eight taps, together with its Italian tempo marking from Largo to Presto.

Use the big tap button, touch it on a phone, or press the space bar on a computer. Pause for two seconds and the count starts again, so you can measure the next song straight away.

How to find the tempo of a song

  • Play the song and listen for the beat, the pulse you would clap or nod to.
  • Tap the button or press the space bar on every beat.
  • After a few taps the BPM settles; keep tapping for a steadier reading.
  • Press Reset, or wait two seconds, to measure another song.

Frequently asked questions

How does tap tempo work?

It measures the time between your taps and turns the average gap into beats per minute, using your last eight taps.

How many taps do I need?

Two taps give a first reading. Four to eight taps give a much steadier BPM.

Can I set the metronome to the tempo I tapped?

Yes. The metronome has its own Tap tempo button that sets its speed from your taps.
