Interval ear training

Ear training teaches you to recognise the distance between two notes, the skill behind playing by ear, transcribing songs and singing in tune. Press Play, listen, and choose the interval you heard.

Start at the beginner level with thirds, the fourth, the fifth and the octave, then move up to all twelve intervals. Hear the notes one after another or together, and keep track of your score as you go.

How to practise intervals

  • Octave: the first two notes of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Frequently asked questions

What is interval ear training?

Practice at naming the distance between two notes by ear, such as a major third or a perfect fifth. It is the basis of playing music by ear.

Which intervals should beginners learn first?

The minor and major third, the perfect fourth, the perfect fifth and the octave. The beginner level uses exactly these.

How long does it take to train your ear?

A few minutes a day makes a difference within weeks. Short, regular sessions work better than long, occasional ones.
